A Suzuki V-Strom before there ever was one, the 1997 Suzuki XF650 Freewind could easily make the case as being the V-Strom's predecessor. Off-road-ish styling, psuedo knobby tires, street and dirt intentions - all of those are traits the V-Strom carries. Heck, both even have 650 (ish)cc engines!

The XF650 supposedly weighed 360 pounds wet, just a bit more than the DR. Suzuki claimed 47 horsepower at the crank, and 38.4 pound-feet of torque, while the DR650 has about 43 horsepower at the crank, with roughly 47 pound-feet of torque.
